NYU Weight Management Program

Providing several options for patients with severe and morbid obesity who seek changes in their lives, the NYU Langone Weight Management Program provides the option of bariatric surgery in addition to non-surgical options for a second chance at life. Bariatric surgery reduces the size of the patient’s stomach through an implanted medical device called a gastric band, which is placed at the top of the stomach to slow the passage of food through it. The NYU Langone Weight Management Program also offers bariatric surgery to patients that carry a Body Mass Index (BMI) of more than 40, a BMI of more than 35 with certain afflictions such as diabetes and heart disease, or a history of obesity with failure of other treatments. To ensure a high success rate with bariatric surgery, the NYU Langone Weight Management Program first assesses patients to determine if they qualify for the procedure. Then, patients attend free informational sessions provided by the NYU Langone Weight Management program to understand the procedure they may undertake, and then they receive assistance in determining payment and organizing medical records. Following this, patients in the NYU Langone Weight Management Program must meet with a psychologist to discuss the lifestyle changes they need to make in order to lose weight on a permanent basis, as well as a nutritional assessment to identify necessary adjustments to diet both prior to and after surgery. After being cleared for surgery and completing the necessary documentation, NYU Langone Weight Management Program patients consult with the surgical staff to schedule an appointment. Through a combination of the gastric band, a proper diet, and conscientious exercise, patients in the NYU Langone Weight Management Program can lose a significant amount of weight and gain an improved quality of life overall. Following surgery, patients at the NYU Langone Weight Management Program receive regular follow-ups, establishing a diet and exercise regimen to ensure a minimum one to two pound weight loss rate per week, and to make certain that any complications such as vomiting or diarrhea receive assessments.

Birds in Natural Environment posted by Anna Cervova The Animal Medical Center is over 100 years old and can trace its origins back to the turn of the 20th century. The Animal Medical Center began as the brainchild of Ellin Prince Speyer, who founded the Women’s Auxiliary to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in New York in 1906. The society was formed with the intention of creating an organization to protect and care for the city's animals. By 1910, the Women’s Auxiliary to the ASPCA had founded a pet care clinic–the beginning of The Animal Medial Center–which treated more than 6,000 animals in its first year of operation. Four years later, the organization opened up a three-story hospital with a resident veterinarian. Eventually, after weathering the Great Depression and two World Wars, the hospital took on a new name: The Animal Medical Center. Today, The Animal Medical Center strives to put the tenets and principles of its founder into practice. With cutting-edge facilities and a variety of specialized treatments available on-site, The Animal Medical Center is a leader in pet healthcare. Beyond its staff of regular veterinarians and specialists, the facility also has an emergency and critical-care unit, open 24/7, to treat animals in times of crisis. The hospital also provides services for pet owners, such as the Pet Loss Support group, where mourners can express themselves in a safe environment and find comfort in an understanding community.
